Part A-Hospital Insurance

Helps cover:

  • Services from doctors and other health care providers
  • Outpatient care

  • Durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, and other equipment)
  • Many Preventive services (like screenings, shots or vaccines, and yearly " Wellness" visits.

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (Part D) are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare





Original Medicare

  • Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance)
  • You can join a separate Medicare drug plan to get Medicare drug plan to get Medicare drug coverage (Part D)
  • You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.
  • You can also shop for and buy supplemental coverage that helps pay your out-of-pocket cost (like your 20% coinsurance)

Supplemental Coverage-It can help pay some costs that other parts don't cover.  This includes Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap).



  • Medicare Advantage is a Medicare approved plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. These "bundled" plans include Part A, Part B and usually Part D.
  • In many cases, you can only use doctors, who are in the plans network
  • In many cases, you may need to get approval from your plan before it covers certain drugs or services
  • Plans often have different out-of-pocket costs than original Medicare or supplemental coverage like Medigap. You may also have an additional premium.
  • Plans may offer some extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn't


  • October 15 to December 7, 2024- Change your Medicare health or drug coverage for 2025, if you decide to.
  • January 1, 2025-New coverage begins.
  • January 1 to March 31, 2025. If you're in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare (and join a separate Medicare drug plan) once during this time.


INITIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD-Generally, you can first sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.  If you birthday is on the first of the month, your 7-month period starts 4 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 2 months after you turn 65.


SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD - After your initial enrollment Period is over, you may have a chance to sign up for Medicare during a Special Enrollment Period.  For example, if you didn't sign up for Part B (or Part A, if you have to buy it) when you were first eligible because you have group health plan coverage based on current employment, you can sign up for Part A and/or Part B:

  • Any time you're still covered by the group health plan
  • During the 8-month period that begins the month after the employment ends or the coverage ends, whichever happens first.

GENERAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD- You can sign up for Part B during the General Enrollment Period (January 1-March 31 each year) if you missed your initial Enrollment Period and don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. You can buy Part A during this time if you don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period
